The Comprehension of Speech Acts Ability in Alzheimer`s disease and vascular dementia

Abstract
This study examined different characteristics of the comprehension of speech ability appearing in the communication of patients with Alzheimer¡¯s disease. It was compared to those with vascular dementia and normal elderly who were specifically between the age 65 and 89. The results indicate that the groups were statistically different on the comprehension of speech act ability and it appeared in the following order: normal elderly (highest), vascular dementia (intermediate), and Alzheimer¡¯s disease (lowest). The groups were also statistically different on the subtypes of comprehension of speech act ability. It suggests systematic approach to efficiently evaluate and treat language function of elderly with vascular dementia and Alzheimer¡¯s disease.
